Introduction to Neo-expressionism
- Much Common with figurative art, difference lies in portraying recognizable objects
- expressive and colorful art style
- Tried to bridge the gap between fine art and normal audiences
- mostly popular in mid-1980s
- exhibit disillusionment with current systems and traditions both from art and world
- was introduced as a return to expressionist movement in 1900s although the style is different
Key movements in Neo-expressionism
- one of earliest movements and most critical to the movement at large was Neue Wilden from Germany
- it was a response to WWII and their devided nation
- George Baselitz was the head of the movement
-French arm of Neo-expressionism was Figurative Libre (free figuration), formed in 1981
- it incorporated figurative elements with comic book and graffiti art style, bright colors and caricature-like figures
-Bad paing was American Neo-expressionism
- got its name from Maria Tcucker's exhibit called Bad Painter
-Transavanguardia (beyond the Avant-garde) is Italian Neo-expressionism in 1980s and 1990s -it employed nostalgic references to Renaissance painting and iconography
- wide range of subjects e.g. portraits, self-portrait and imaginative portraits with representational and figurative
- in opposition to the canons of classical good taste
